This report presents several methods currently used in Australia to detect and reduce leaks from nitrous oxide. It also includes case studies, resources and recommended next steps to assist with the detection and reduction of leaks.
Several studies have shown that as much as 70% of nitrous oxide leaks from pipes before ever reaching the patient. The identification of nitrous leaks will support healthcare facilities to:
- avoid wastage
- reduce costs
- prevent environmental harm.

Environment & sustainability research grant
The Environment and Sustainability Research Grant supports research activity towards: 1) evaluating the environmental impact of current anaesthesia, pain medicine and perioperative practice; 2) evaluating the impact of implementing environmentally sustainable solutions; and 3) establishing effective implementation models to promote sustainability.
