In this episode, ANZCA President, Dr Chris Cokis interviews Dr Vanessa Beavis. Vanessa is the immediate past president of ANZCA and has held positions including chair of the Training Accreditation Committee, chair of the Perioperative Medicine Steering Committee, ANZCA Council representative on the FPM Board, founding chair of the Anaesthetists and Leadership Special Interest Group, and was an examiner for the final exams. Vanessa talks to Chris about her journey from South Africa to Auckland, her time as president during the pandemic and her significant role in the new ANZCA Course in Perioperative Medicine.

The goal of this program is to improve management of shortages of anesthesiology providers, including how to anticipate issues with staffing which have been shown to increase the risk for medical errors.

The goal of this program is to improve patient outcomes through reduction of postoperative delirium. After hearing and assimilating this program, the clinician will be better able to compare postoperative delirium associated with use of sevoflurane vs propofol.

This program aims to improve pain control with the use of long-acting local anesthetics. This includes strategies to analyse the efficacy and safety of newer long-acting local anesthetics.

This program aims to improve the management of the opioid crisis, and includes identifying factors that contribute to the misuse, optimising opioid dosing, and counselling patients.
Regional Anesthesia Improves Long-Term Outcomes (28 Mar 2023)
This program aims to improve outcomes for surgical patients with regional anesthesia, and includes choosing an appropriate anaesthetic techniques for use during formation of arteriovenous fistulae, and preventing delirium in patients undergoing hip surgery.
