Data science approaches are increasingly being employed across the continuum of HPE training to advance both theory and practice. In this context, data science research affords new ways of thinking about the role of theory, analytical methods, and the role of evidence in decision making. However, there is still much work to do beyond the ‘hype’. This includes addressing outstanding issues about the feasibility of research using data from multiple previously unexplored sources, and about the social and ethical implications related to privacy, confidentiality, and governance. While there are some examples of research that have navigated these issues, by and large, the challenges to engaging in data science and big data research remain significant. These challenges are not unique to HPE and are being addressed in related fields including higher education and epidemiology. Moreover, important questions have been raised regarding the unintended consequences and potential inequitable practices or outcomes in big data research.

This Collection seeks to determine the missing links between the determinants and processes of collaboration at several levels, including links among learners, teachers and professionals, organisations, as well as among political, socio-economic and cultural systems.
