Annual structured conversation/ performance appraisal

  • Formal structured meeting with your head of department/practice, manager, or a trusted colleague to review your professional activities, development needs, learning goals and plans for the following year.
  • This activity is a mandatory requirement for those with medical registration in New Zealand.

  • Complete an ANZCA online activity - see the resources section for a list of recommended activities/resources.​
  • Consider utilising the college's well-being support resources as part of your review process.


  • Either participant in the annual structured conversation/critical appraisal may choose to undertake a critical reflection activity to determine how to incorporate feedback received or reflect on the experience of providing feedback into practice improvement.
  • Consider participating in a mentoring activity to work collaboratively toward achieving mutually-defined goals which will develop the mentee's skills, abilities, knowledge and thinking.

This resource supports medical students, doctors in training and doctors engaging in revalidation on how to reflect as part of their practice. It has been developed jointly by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (UK), the UK Conference of Postgraduate Medical Deans (COPMeD), the General Medical Council (GMC UK), and the Medical Schools Council (UK).
